This mid-layer is made with STATIC's much talked about Octa x wool yarn, AYUKAN, released for Fall/Winter 2024. Octa is highly absorbent and quick-drying, allowing you to wear it all the time, but because it's 100% polyester, it can develop an unpleasant odor if not washed regularly. AYUKAN yarn solves this Octa problem. It's a new type of active insulation that's just as lightweight as the company's Adrift, while also retaining the comfort and odor-resistant properties of wool.

It stretches well, so any size will fit, but the length is best in M/L. I usually have trouble deciding on a size, but this product was easy to choose.

Octa® x Wool "ROAR" series born

Twisted yarn is yarn made by twisting multiple threads together. There are hollow hand-knitted threads made from a single type of thread, and threads made by twisting different types of thread together, such as polyester and wool.

Furthermore, the hardness and strength of twisted yarn changes depending on the number of twists, so it is a highly skilled technique to carefully adjust the twist while imagining the final result, and to perfect the twisted yarn through repeated trials. Furthermore, twisted yarn that has been brushed or processed into a special shape is called "designed twisted yarn."

Among twisted yarns, fancy twisted yarn requires special techniques, and in fact there are several companies in Japan that have excellent techniques for fancy twisted yarn.

Many maison brands make clothes using never-before-seen fabrics, and many of these have the backing of Japan's advanced technology. The special twisted yarns, which are not usually used in mass-produced goods and require time and effort and cost, are the result of pursuing techniques unique to Japan, and are a unique know-how that Japan can be proud of.

STATIC focused on this decorative twisting technology, twisting wool into hollow Octa® yarn and then filing only the wool to raise it. This resulted in the creation of the one-of-a-kind yarn "AYUKAN," which combines the lightness of Octa® yarn with the fluffy warmth of raised wool.

We then used this yarn to create knitwear using the WHOLEGARMENT method, where the entire garment is knitted. With WHOLEGARMENT, clothing is knitted directly from the yarn. Normally, when cutting T-shirts or fleece fabric, 20-30% of the fabric is wasted and becomes unusable cutting waste (*). However, with WHOLEGARMENT, when an entire garment is knitted, only about 6g of yarn waste is generated, making it an eco-friendly manufacturing method with a waste rate of less than 5%.

*At STATIC, we do not throw away cutting waste, but instead recycle it and turn it back into thread.
